Ba-Pef
God of uncertain nature, though probably a
deity of pain or woe, Ba-Pef means simply 'that soul', but
the use of the non-specific name implies fear or taboo of
mentioning the god's real name. In the Pyramid Texts the
netherworld house of Ba-Pef 'wherein is woe' is mentioned,
but no other details are given. There is some evidence of
a priesthood of Ba-Pef in Old Kingdom times (in the tomb
of Meresankh III at Giza), though the god does not seem to
have been of great importance in any period.
